Dairy and beef cattle, sheep, goats, hogs, poultry, pigeons, turkeys, ducks, game birds, rabbits, ratites, llamas… from traditional livestock and poultry to specialty species, The Mill carries the feeds to fit all your needs.  We stock The Mill’s own blends, carry a variety of other manufacturers feeds and can mix custom rations to meet individual customers’ needs.

Our knowledgeable and experienced staff can prepare custom formulations and answer questions related to animal nutrition, health and management.   The Mill offers Pasture and Forage Management Services, Nutrition Consulting and Integrated Farm Management. 

In addition to feed, The Mill stocks a large inventory of general farming supplies including feeding equipment, barn tools, fencing, pest control measures, and animal health products. We carry work coats, boots and gloves, including a full line of Carhartt.  The Mill also stocks livestock halters, grooming equipment and show supplies.

THE MILL GUIDE TO WIRE PRODUCTS

Some Basics
Galvanization: The process of taking steel wire and coating it with rust-resistant zinc coating. Our wire products (hi-tensile, barbed, woven, horse mesh, welded mesh, etc.) are all galvanized steel wire.
Class 3 vs. Class 1 Galvanized Wire – The Class 3 galvanized coating is approximately double the amount of the coating on Class 1 wire, thus the Class 3 wire is more weather/rust resistant and therefore longer lasting.

Wire Gauge: Wire size is listed as the “gauge” in a wire description. A smaller gauge number means a larger diameter wire.
ex: a 12.5 gauge wire is larger in diameter than a 17 gauge wire

Barbed Wire
We carry the 4-point barbed wire, meaning there are 4 points on each “barb.” Barbed wire products are Class 3 galvanized, come 1320ft./roll, and the following products are in stock:

WIRE BARBED 12.5G - regular “old-fashioned” barbed wire
WIRE BARBED 15.5G HIGH TENSILE – high tensile barbed wire, but since it is a high tensile wire, it is still as strong as the regular 12.5g barbed wire

Brace Wire
Typically we carry the 10-lb. rolls of Class 1 brace wire, usually in 9g, 11g, and 14g (a 10-lb. roll is, give or take depending on the gauge, about 100ft. of wire). This product is sometimes used to make grape trellis – this would work for that if they have a relatively short span.

High Tensile Wire
Contains a higher carbon content than regular wire, and is much stronger than regular low carbon steel wire. The higher carbon content also allows the wire to expand and contract during temperature changes so that the wire does not sag over time. High tensile wire has more “spring” or give to it, allowing it to bounce back and remain in place without sagging if animals hit it, if a tree falls on it, etc. The tensile strength (or breaking point or breaking strength) of high tensile wire is listed as “pounds per square inch,” or “psi” - tensile or breaking strength of high tensile wire is much greater than that of standard galvanized wire. As an example, 170,000 psi means it would take approximately 170,000 pounds per square inch of pressure or pull to break that wire. High tensile wire actually weighs less than
standard galvanized wire of the same gauge but has the same linear strength. We carry both 170,000 psi and 200,000 psi 12.5 gauge Class 3 high tensile wire.

“Horse” Wire
There are a couple of options here, in a woven non-climb type wire fencing for horses. Both are 12.5 gauge Class 3 galvanized wire. Although more expensive than welded wire mesh or vinyl-coated welded wire mesh fencing, these could also be used for pet fencing as well.

“Non-Climb” – traditional non-climb horse fence has a 2”x4” woven wire mesh with a hinge-joint knot designed to be tough but designed not to cause abrasions to animals that hit the fence. Made of low carbon (not high tensile) wire.

“Fixed Knot” – a newer type of horse fence that is made from high tensile wire, has 3”x3” wire mesh spacing, and has the “fixed knot” (different from the knot in the traditional non-climb wire) which tightly holds the vertical and horizontal wires together. The 3”x3” we have in stock is all 3”x3” spacing from top to bottom, unlike woven wire field fence, which has graduated spacing of horizontal wires (smaller at the bottom, going wider as you go towards the top)

Woven Wire
Also referred to as “field fence or wire” or “livestock fence or wire” or “stock fence or wire,” the numerical descriptions for those wires work as follows:
The first 1 or 2 numbers (starts with 8, 9, 10 or higher) of the description indicate the number of horizontal wires, then next 2 numbers refer to the height of the fence (in inches), the next number is the distance (in inches) between the vertical stay wires, then the next numbers refer to the gauge of the horizontal line and vertical stay wires (the top and bottom edge wires are usually 1 gauge higher, larger, than the line and stay wires).

ex: 939-6-12.5 -this wire has 9 horizontal wires, is 39” high, is 6” between the vertical stay wires, and the line and stay wires are 12.5 gauge

Woven wire fencing all comes in 330-ft. rolls and can be high tensile or standard wire

Coated High Tensile Equine Fence Products
These are relatively new “equine friendly” and equine safe poly-coated high tensile products. The product line includes:
-“Equi-Kote” – poly-coated high tensile wire that is not electrifiable
-“Equi-Hot” - poly-coated high tensile wire that can be electrified
-“Equi/Flex Rail” - 4-inch or 5-inch wide poly rail, with poly-coated high tensile wire at the top and bottom (and middle of the rail in the 5-inch); can also be ordered as “Hot-Rail,” that can be electrified (carbon strip along top of rail)

Temporary Electric Fence Products
These include poly wire, poly tape (in ½” and 1.5” widths), a braided poly wire product called “Equi-Braid.” Usually used with some type of step-in post.

Welded Wire
Available in a variety of gauge and mesh sizes, this wire is welded at each point where the horizontal and vertical wires cross, as opposed to having some type of knot at each of these horizontal and vertical crossovers, as in the woven wire or non-climb horse wires. The first number is inches between vertical stay wires, the second is distance between horizontal line wires, the third is the height of the wire, and the final number in the description is the gauge of the welded wire. The gauge is the same for all vertical and horizontal wires, and the mesh size is the same top to bottom in the welded wire.

-this roll is 2 inches between vertical wires, 4 inches between horizontal wires,
48 inches high, 100 feet long and 14 gauge welded wire

Vinyl-Coated Mesh
Available in black or green in 100-ft. rolls, this is a 2”X4” welded vinyl-coated mesh and is listed as “WIRE LAWN. . . . . “ Often used to fence in pets, especially to line split rail fencing, it has a more attractive look than plain galvanized welded mesh wire.

-this roll is 36 inches wide and 100 feet long

Poultry Netting or Poultry Wire
This is made of a fine 20 gauge wire in a hexagonal (6-sided) mesh. The hexagonal mesh is a 1-inch or 2-inch size mesh. In the description, the first number is the height (width) of the wire, the second indicates whether it is the 1- or 2-inch mesh, the 20 is the gauge, then the final number is the length of the roll.

-this roll is 48 inches wide/high, 1-inch hex mesh, 20gauge, 25 feet long

Hardware Cloth
Hardware cloth is a lightweight (19 gauge usually) mesh that is 1/4x1/4-inch or 1/2x1/2-inch. In our descriptions, we use 2x2 or 4x4 rather than 1/2x1/2 or 1/4x1/4.

The experienced consultants at The Mill can advise you regarding all aspects of your pasture management and forage programs. These services include recommendations on species and variety selection, establishment, forage stand maintenance and grazing and harvest management. We can collect haylage and pasture samples and send them to certified labs for forage quality analysis. The results will then be used by our expert staff to design a total nutrition program to optimize animal performance and development.

Grain Farm Services
The Mill is your source for all your grain needs. From seed choice through harvest, our team of talented agronomists will assist you in making the most economical and efficient choices. We will pull your soil samples to determine your needs, and assist you with the correct grain choices. From applying correct amounts of plant food, to application of lime, The Mill employs 5 agronomy experts, each with over 20 years of practical experience. The Mill seed selection includes Asgrow, DeKalb, Mid-Atlantic, Southern States and TA Seeds. Once your crop is planted we have 5 applicator rigs to apply plant food and weed control.
