History of The Mill of Bel Air

In 1886, Reckord Mill was constructed by Henry Reckord. It was considered to be Bel Air's 1st largest industrial enterprise, and was the only industry in town from the 19th century to WWII. Approximately 100 barrels of flour were mixed in the mill per day. In 1888, Bel Air Roller Mill opened to the public, selling goods such as, fertilizer, feed, and flour at bottom prices.

In 1957, H. Smith Walter purchased the company for $40,000, plus the cost of repairs, renaming it Bel Air Farm Supply. H. Smith Walter successfully operated the mill from 1955 to 1986, making many improvements. Walter added new warehousing, an office addition, two new upright mixers, and aluminum siding for the mill building.

In 1986, Henry Smith Holloway, grandson of H. Smith Walter, purchased the business and surrounding property. Holloway renovated the store, enlarging the retail aspect of it, as well as the warehouse, and feed mill. In 1997, Bel Air Farm Supply won the Appearance & Preservation Committee Award and the Archer-Bull Award for the renovation & preservation of the old Reckord Mill. To this day, approximately 25-30 tons of feed are mixed per day. The Mill of Bel Air, previously known as Bel Air Farm Supply, bases it's business around the 'family-owned' aspect. The Mill carries a variety of products for everyone including, equine, dairy & livestock, pet, wild bird, lawn & garden, fencing, clothing, & more. Although the Reckord Mill is a name of the past, when you look at the appearance of the store and mill, as well as the products that are presently sold, it is obvious that General Reckord intended Reckord Mill to be a feed mill for the public, and that is what it remains to this day.
